In addition to having smoke alarms, families should regularly test them to ensure they work, and also create and practice home escape plans so everyone know what to do should the smoke alarms go off. ![]() ![]() Requests will be fulfilled as resources allow, with priority given to requests during National Sound the Alarm events. The Rhode Island Red Cross will provide installation services in Rhode Island only. In fact, research indicates that having working smoke alarms can cut the risk of injury or death from a home fire in half. The Red Cross and its partners can test existing smoke alarms and install up to three free smoke alarms for those that need them. The success of last weekend’s activities would not have been possible without partners such as the Scottsbluff Fire Department, the Gering Rural Fire Department, Region 22 Emergency Management Agency, Rural Radio and the Scotts Bluff Area Rotary Club. That’s why the Red Cross continues to bring awareness of home fire safety through it’s Sound the Alarm initiative. Retired FDNY firefighters and Red Cross volunteers will then come and install smoke alarms in every bedroom, and one combination smoke/CO alarm on every floor. Home fires are the most common disaster that the Red Cross responds to each year. Anyone can get these free detectors by calling 877-RED-CROSS to schedule an installation appointment. Last weekend, American Red Cross Volunteers installed 72 free smoke alarms in homes in Scottsbluff and Gering in an effort to make homes throughout these communities safer.Īlong with installing the alarms, volunteers shared valuable home fire safety tips and resources with families.
